You, LORD, are my shepherd. I will never be in need.
You let me rest in fields of green grass. You lead me to streams of peaceful water, and you refresh my life.
You are true to your name, and you lead me along the right paths. I may walk through valleys as dark as death, but I won’t be afraid. You are with me, and your shepherd’s rod [a] makes me feel safe.
You treat me to a feast, while my enemies watch. You honor me as your guest, and you fill my cup
until it overflows. Your kindness and love will always be with me each day of my life, and I will live forever in your house, LORD.
Psalm 23 (Contemporary English Version)
This Scripture is most noticeable as a funeral recitation. However, let us take a moment and experience the refreshing promises that it holds for us everyday.
When was the last day that you had just one of those days? You know the kind I am speaking of; the day that just seemed to go on forever and ever. Today you say?! Or, maybe you can relate to the person who just sees no end in sight. There are deadlines, deadpan stares and deadly daggers from every angle. Enemies for you would be a step up from what you feel surrounding your every moment.
My dear beloved in Christ, I want to encourage you to stop for just a moment. If it is all spinning out of control, trust me, it will be there when we arise from this respite. Just stop – drink in the nourishment of our Lord.
These words can offer you life if you will let them. Surely the author of such poetry knew what it was like to live in a world spiraling about. When every turn seemed only to lead to a death of life, when every face seemed to be that of an enemy, when the storms of life raged against the very fibers of their being. Sound familiar?
Then, as if a lifeline truely from the very Throne of God, comes the sweetest fragrance of peace – the promises of an eternity lived presently and eternally with The King. What majesty!!
So, if you have had “one of those days”, know that one is praying for you. Know that there is One who sees and is, at this very moment, preparing a quited place of rest for you and you do not have to wait until you are at final rest to experience its solace. All your response has to be is to come.
